George O’Leary resigned as head coach of winless Central Florida effective immediately, multiple media outlets reported Sunday.
O’Leary, 69, had stepped down as the school’s athletic director earlier this month after serving both roles.
Central Florida’s record fell to 0-8 after it lost to Houston 59-10 on Saturday.
Quarterbacks coach Danny Barrett will serve as UCF’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
O’Leary, who was in his eighth season as the Knights’ head coach, had an 81-68 record at UCF.
Two years ago, O’Leary and quarterback Blake Bortles led the Knights to a 12-1 record and a 52-42 victory over Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl. The Knights were No. 10 in the final 2013 rankings.
O’Leary has a 133-101 record as a college head coach.
He spent seven years as head coach of Georgia Tech and accepted to job at Notre Dame after the 2001 season. However, five days after accepting the Irish post, O’Leary resigned when Notre Dame officials discovered some inaccuracies in his resume.
