Clemson freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence exited Saturday’s game against Syracuse with about five minutes remaining in the first half after absorbing a head shot while scrambling along the sideline.
After Clemson rallied for a 27-23 victory, coach Dabo Swinney said Lawrence exited with concussion-related symptoms

Lawrence dropped back to pass under center, avoiding two tackles before moving to his left and running down the sideline. As he gained a few yards, Syracuse defensive back Evan Foster hit him near the ride side of his helmet.

Lawrence was down for a few minutes before walking off under his own power. He was evaluated in the medical tent where the Clemson training staff took away his helmet and Lawrence headed toward the locker room.

In his first career start, Lawrence completed 10 of 15 passes for 93 yards. He was replaced by Chase Brice as the Tigers faced a 16-7 deficit at halftime.

–The idea of Alabama backup quarterback Jalen Hurts possibly redshirting this season came to an end Saturday.

Hurts was inserted into Saturday’s matchup for the top-ranked Crimson Tide against overmatched Louisiana, marking the fifth game he has appeared in this season.

Per a new NCAA rule this season, a player can appear in as many as four games and still qualify for a redshirt season.

A report by the Athletic earlier this month suggested Hurts was planning to take that route due to his frustration over the quarterback controversy and how it was handled by the team’s coaching staff.

Tua Tagovailoa supplanted Hurts as the starter this season, but Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said he still plans to take advantage of Hurts’ skill set

–Texas Tech freshman quarterback Alan Bowman was knocked out of Saturday’s 42-36 loss to No. 12 West Virginia.

Bowman was injured when he was sandwiched by a pair of Mountaineers’ defenders, absorbing jarring hits to his chest and upper back just after releasing a pass.

Bowman was second nationally in passing yards with 1,557 through four games, helping the No. 25 Red Raiders’ offense average 623.5 yards per game — tops in the country.

— Duke starting quarterback Daniel Jones returned to the lineup for Saturday night’s matchup against visiting Virginia Tech.

The school announced Saturday morning that Jones would be back under center for the No. 22 Blue Devils after missing two games because of a fractured collarbone.

Jones was injured in a game against Northwestern on Sept. 8 and underwent surgery the following day.

— Alabama-Birmingham suspended running back Kingston Davis indefinitely Thursday.

Davis, who played one year at Michigan, was disciplined due to an unspecified student-conduct issue, according to the school.

“Kingston Davis has been placed on interim suspension from UAB pending a student conduct investigation,” the university’s athletic department said in a statement released Thursday. “Due to federal student privacy laws, the institution cannot disclose details at this time.”
