Clemson sophomore receiver Hunter Renfrow will be sidelined for at least four games after breaking his right hand.
An MRI exam performed Monday displayed a crack in a bone below Renfrow’s right thumb, according to Tigers coach Dabo Swinney.
Renfrow broke the hand while sliding into the wall upon catching a 35-yard touchdown pass in Saturday’s 30-24 victory over Troy. Swinney said the injury will require a surgical procedure.
The Tigers are hoping Renfrow will return for the contest against North Carolina State on Oct. 15.
Renfrow has four receptions for 62 yards and two touchdowns this season. The former walk-on caught 33 passes for 492 yards and five touchdowns last season, including two scores in the loss to Alabama in the national championship game.
The No. 5 Tigers are expected to promote one of two sophomores — Ray-Ray McCloud or Trevion Thompson — to the starting lineup.
McCloud came under criticism on Saturday for dropping the ball before crossing the goal line in the contest against Troy. Instead of a 75-yard punt-return score, the ball was awarded to Troy after a review.
