Florida State senior quarterback Sean Maguire will undergo surgery Monday to repair a broken bone in his right foot that will sideline him for approximately four weeks.

Maguire was injured during Wednesday’s practice and coach Jimbo Fisher revealed the seriousness on Saturday.

“On the foot, the outside little bone in his foot, they’re going to have to put a screw in it,” Fisher told reporters. “The same injury (safety) Derwin (James) had so (he will be out) about four weeks. He’ll be back probably by the second, third game of the year.”

Maguire was competing with redshirt freshman Deondre Francois for the starting job. Maguire began the 2015 campaign as the Seminoles’ backup but ended up starting five games and passed for 1,520 yards, 11 touchdowns and six interceptions.

He missed spring practice drills after fracturing his left ankle in the Chick Fil-A Peach Bowl loss to Houston.

“There’s somebody with as much character as anybody on our football team,” Fisher said. “Of course he’s down. He felt bad, but there was no hesitation about what to do and how to do it. I have the utmost respect for Sean Maguire.”

Fisher didn’t immediately name Francois as the starter for the season opener against Mississippi on Sept. 5.

“I don’t know, I don’t know yet,” Fisher said. “It isn’t the game yet. When it gets to the game, we’ll see.”
