Petrino picks a starter at QB

Louisville coach Bobby Petrino has used two quarterbacks in the first three weeks of the season so who is the starter moving forward.

“Malik will be the starter,” Petrino confirmed Monday during his Virginia week press conference. “He’s had 12 possessions that he started and scored eight times in those 12 possessions. He gives us energy. He gets the guys around him to play hard.”

Cunningham has come off the bench the last two weeks to lead Louisville to wins. Petrino said the offense running well was a key factor in making his decision in benching previous starter Jawon “Puma” Pass.

“I had Puma up in my office yesterday. I felt bad for him,” Petrino said.

“Obviously, it’s not what I expected. It’s not what he expected. It’s hard on him, but he’ll come back. He’ll regroup. But like I told him, I’ve to got to do what’s best for the team. Right now, that’s what I feel is best.”

Pass, who has been battling turf toe for the last two weeks, could make a return as a starter at some point in the future, but Cunningham will get the first snaps vs. Virginia on Saturday.

“Malik can throw the ball down the field, he can make the throws we need to make,” Petrino said.
