PLAYERS TO WATCH

–RB Antonio Williams, a transfer from Ohio State, had a big game with 114 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the win over Pittsburgh. The guy was violent with his runs, coach Larry Fedora said. “He finished runs off and he broke tackles. He came up big at the end there to pick up the first down. He was a horse out there, he really was.” Such production is needed to help open up the passing game, but he will be up against a Miami defense that held its last opponent, Florida International, to just 17 net yards on 24 rushes.

–WR Dazz Newsome is coming off career highs for both receptions and receiving yardage after catching six balls for 110 yards against Pitt. The sophomore didn’t have a touchdown reception, but he could take some of the load off Anthony Ratliff-Williams if he continues to produce like this. “You go all the way back to last year and whenever the ball was in Dazz’s hands,” Fedora said. “He has a knack for making people miss and picking up extra yards.”

–LB Cole Holcomb will have the job of trying to slow Miami’s running game. He played a huge role in North Carolina’s win, recording 12 tackles with a sack and another tackle for loss in addition to breaking up a pass. “Cole is one of the leaders of our defense,” Fedora said. “He’s obviously the guy who has the most experience out there for us, really. He is a leader and guys believe in him.”

–S Myles Dorn has been missed in the Tar Heels’ secondary while dealing with a leg injury that has kept him out of the last two games. The Tar Heels have yet to come up with an interception in their three games and will be facing a big-play type receiver in Miami’s Jeff Thomas.

SERIES HISTORY: North Carolina and Miami are tied 10-10. Miami won last year’s meeting 24-19.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “Really big win. We need it. We are 1-0 in the ACC and that’s all that matters. We are in ACC play now and need to keep chopping each team down.” — RB Antonio Williams, after the win over Pittsburgh.
