Former Kentucky quarterback Gunnar Hoak will join Ohio State as a graduate transfer.

Hoak, an Ohio native who entered the NCAA transfer portal last week, announced Saturday on Twitter that he had accepted an offer to continue a family tradition and play for the Buckeyes.

Hoak is scheduled to graduate from Kentucky next week and has two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-4, 206-pound signal-caller redshirted with the Wildcats in 2016 and did not appear in any games in 2017. He played in five games in 2018 and completed 13 of 26 passes for 167 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Hoak’s father, uncle and cousin all played at Ohio State. His uncle, Fred Pagac, was an assistant coach with the Buckeyes from 1978-2000 before joining the NFL coaching ranks. Gunnar grew up near the Columbus campus in Dublin, Ohio.

“Ever since I was born at OSU hospital, some aspect of my life has always involved scarlet and gray,” Hoak wrote in his Twitter post. “And while I have gained so much experience during my time in Lexington, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to continue a family legacy.”

Georgia transfer Justin Fields is expected to take over the Buckeyes’ starting job following the departure of Dwayne Haskins to the NFL. His projected backup, Matthew Baldwin, entered the transfer portal 10 days ago.
