College football fans in the Hawkeye State got a surprise Saturday when they went to look for news about the Iowa and Iowa State programs: Twitter suspended the official accounts of both football programs.

Twitter users trying to access either account received an error message that said the account was unavailable because of a suspension.

Iowa spokesman Steve Roe said in an email to media outlets that the women’s gymnastics team account also had been suspended, but that was operational again Saturday afternoon.

“Two University of Iowa Athletics Department official twitter accounts have been suspended due to music copyright infringement in a limited number of posts in 2018,” Roe wrote. “We are in the process of working with Twitter to resolve the issues and to ensure future posts are in compliance, and as a result, one of the accounts has been reactivated. We appreciate everyone’s patience and support of the UI Athletics Department social media accounts.”

An Iowa State spokesman said the school was discussing the issue with Twitter.
