KEY MATCHUP: Lost in the offense’s struggles against Iowa was the fact that the defense did an outstanding job keeping the Hawkeyes in check. Oklahoma’s Kyle Murray will be a tougher challenge and preventing him from turning broken plays into big gains will be another big test for freshman linebacker Mike Rose, who was outstanding in his collegiate debut with 11 tackles against Iowa.

–RB David Montgomery struggled to move the ball against Iowa, with just 44 yards on 17 carries. The good news is that the Hawkeyes are probably the best defensive front Iowa State will see all season. The bad news is that if Kyle Kempt can’t go on Saturday, Oklahoma will be even more focused than usual on keeping him in check.

–C Colin Newell might see significant action against the Sooners. The redshirt freshman was one of the stars of preseason camp, and the offensive line faltered in the loss to the Hawkeyes last week. That would also allow Julian-Good Jones to move outside to left tackle.

–QB Re-al Mitchell may be unleashed against Oklahoma this week. The freshman runs the run-pass option and could provide a needed change of pace to test the Sooner defense.

–DB Dallas Taylor-Cortez remains suspended for violating team rules.
