PLAYERS TO WATCH

–LB Brock Monty plays on most of the Kansas State special teams and broke through to block a punt in the third quarter of the Texas Tech win. The blocked punt, Monty’s second of the season, resulted in a safety, the Wildcats’ first score of the second half. Monty was also in on a tackle in what was the best special teams performance of the season for the Wildcats, who had struggled in that phase. The safety was the first for Kansas State since 2009 and the first off a blocked punt since 2003.

–PK Blake Lynch matched his career-high with four field goals on Saturday, accounting for nine second-half points. Coupled with the safety of a blocked punt, that unit was responsible for all of Kansas State’s second-half scoring. Lynch also booted four field goals in the season-opening win over South Dakota. He is 13-of-15 on the season, in spite of an injury that limited his production.

–RB Alex Barnes was a workhorse who factored into Kansas State’s possession advantage, which totaled more than 15 minutes against Texas Tech. Barnes rushed 32 times for 136 yards. With 228 rushing attempts, he became the first Wildcat to carry 200 times in a season since 2010. Barnes is the Big 12 leader with a 106.5-yard average going into the last game of the regular season at Iowa State.

–WR Malik Knowles, a true freshman playing in just his fourth game, had career-bests for receptions (five) and yardage (56), while posting his second receiving touchdown in the Texas Tech win. That 8-yard pass late in the first half found Knowles move forward in the end zone and gain clearance so scrambling QB Skylar Thompson could make the throw. It was the only touchdown scored by either team.

SERIES HISTORY: Iowa State leads Kansas State 49-48-4. The Wildcats have won 10 straight and dominated the series with Bill Snyder as coach, but during the current streak only two wins were more than single digits. Iowa State blew a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter last year as Kansas State QB Skylar Thompson connected with WR Isaiah Zuber for a touchdown on the game’s final play.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “Guys are so happy for each other. That’s one of the biggest things, is just being able to be proud for your teammates. Coach (Blake) Seiler and Coach (Brian) Norwood both have done a great job putting together game plans for us. I’m just happy to see us get a win, happy to send the seniors out with a win, and I’m looking forward to next week, for sure.” — Kansas State S Denzel Goolsby.
