Kansas freshman running back Pooka Williams was suspended by the school after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery.
Williams was arrested by Kansas University police Thursday afternoon, leading to his suspension from the program.
“We are aware of a reported incident involving Pooka Williams and we are taking these allegations very seriously,” Jayhawks coach Les Miles said in a statement Friday, per the Kansas City Star. “We have suspended Pooka from all team-related activities pending further investigation.”
Williams had a standout first year for Kansas, rushing for 1,125 yards and seven touchdowns on 161 carries. He also had 33 receptions and two scores.
Named the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, Williams ranked sixth in the FBS in all-purpose yards with an average of 150.9 yards per game. He led the Big 12 with 246 yards on 11 kick returns.
Williams rushed for more than 100 yards in four of his 11 games, including a season-high 252 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 carries against powerhouse Oklahoma on Nov. 17. He capped his brilliant season by rushing for 103 yards and a score against Texas.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Williams averaged 7.0 yards per carry and was one of two Big 12 players to post a 100-yard rushing and 100-yard receiving game. He is one of three true freshmen in conference history to score a touchdown via passing, rushing and receiving.
Because the Jayhawks finished 3-8, they will not be going to a bowl game so any further disciplinary action will not affect Williams this season.
