PLAYERS TO WATCH

–LB Joe Dineen recorded double-digit tackles for the fourth time in as many games this season and the 19th time in the senior’s career during the Sept. 22 loss at Baylor. Dineen was in on two tackles for loss and bumped his career total to 37, which ranks fourth at Kansas. By now it’s clear Dineen is the tackler opponents must realize has more range than any of his Kansas teammates.

–S Bryce Torneden was in on nine tackles, matching his career-best, in the Baylor defeat. Torneden, a junior who played at the same hometown (Lawrence, Kan.) high school as Dineen, also possesses great range and is inspired to follow the example set by Dineen.

–RB Pooka Williams rushed for 89 yards on 14 carries at Baylor, falling short the 100-yard plateau for the first time in three career games. Williams’ production did not help much with the Jayhawks’ ineffectiveness moving the football since his total was influenced mostly by a career-best rush of 72 yards that put the Jayhawks in position for their only touchdown. Otherwise, Williams was bottled up by the Baylor defense.

SERIES HISTORY: Oklahoma State leads Kansas 36-29-3. The Cowboys have won 13 of the last 14 matchups, including the last eight, to gain a lead in the series that dates to the Big Eight. Oklahoma State scored on five consecutive first half possessions in a 58-17 rout last season when Kansas QB Peyton Bender regained his starting role because of an injury to Carter Stanley. The loss capped an 0-9 run through the Big 12.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “It’s about putting first downs together. I mean, we’ve got to put first downs together to be able to get that run game going. You can’t just run it three downs all the time if you’re not getting anything out of it. So, we’ve got to be better on first down in the run game and in the passing game as well.” — Kansas coach David Beaty.
