Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight was granted a release from his scholarship after losing his starting job to Baker Mayfield this season, according to multiple reports Thursday.

Knight is set to receive his degree later this month from Oklahoma, making him eligible immediately to play at another school next year as a graduate transfer.

SoonerScoop.com reported that coach Bob Stoops will not block a transfer to another school in the Big 12 but that Knight has not totally ruled out returning next year to Oklahoma.

Kansas State is one of the schools Knight reportedly is considering. Others who have spoken to Knight include Georgia, Oregon and SMU.

Knight played in six games this season for the Sooners, who won the Big 12 championship and reached the College Football Playoff with an 11-1 record. He completed 22 of 40 passes for 305 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was voted a team captain before the season.

However, Mayfield, a walk-on transfer from Texas Tech, claimed the starting job and became one of the finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

Knight had one of his best games for Oklahoma as a freshman in the Sugar Bowl against Alabama, completing 32 of 44 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-31 victory. His last start came in a Russell Athletic Bowl loss to Clemson last December.
