TCU starting linebacker Sammy Douglas suffered a season-ending injury in the team’s season opener at Minnesota on Tuesday night.

Coach Gary Patterson did not specify the nature of the injury but said Tuesday that it was season-ending. Douglas left Thursday’s game on the second possession and didn’t return.

Patterson also indicated that defensive end James McFarland, who didn’t play at Minnesota, also might be out for the season, apparently because of a foot injury.

Third-ranked TCU held on Thursday night for a 23-17 road win over Minnesota.

Douglas had only 17 tackles last season, but he was the leader among returnees this year and the only experienced upperclassman in the linebacking corps. McFarland was TCU’s leading pass rusher last year with seven sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

Expected to plug into their spots are redshirt freshman Ty Summers for Douglas and Terrell Lathan, Mike Tuana or Josh Carraway for McFarland.
