Texas Tech defensive back Octavious Morgan took a medical retirement from football but will retain his scholarship.

“It’s unfortunate Octavious will not be able to finish out his career on the field,” first-year head coach Matt Wells said. “He is well-liked by his teammates and our staff, and our program wishes him nothing but the best as he finishes his degree.”

Morgan, from South Carolina, played two seasons at Butler Community College in Kansas before transferring to Texas Tech.

He played just one season – 2017 – for the Red Raiders. He suffered a season-ending knee injury during preseason practices, forcing him to sit out 2018.

In 2017, Morgan appeared in 13 games, starting five of them. He made 41 tackles and broke up eight passes.
