GAME BREAKDOWN

KEY MATCHUP: West Virginia’s offense versus Kansas’ defense. Unlike last week at Texas Tech when the Mountaineers had to survive a shootout, expect WVU to walk right through Kansas, but they want to get most of the damage done in the first half and get their starters out of harm’s way. That leaves it up to Grier and company to get their work done early.

DRAFT SLANT

–WR David Sills V was in his first full season as a wideout last year and produced some prodigious offensive stats (60 catches, 980 yards and 18 touchdowns). He’s one of two West Virginia players (Grier is the other) named to the AP preseason All-American team and is off to a flying start this year with 23 catches for 294 yards and five touchdowns over the first four games. He’s a prototype slot receiver who can make the big catches over the middle and handle one-on-one hand-play with defensive backs.

ROSTER REPORT:

–QB Will Grier has made 15 starts for the Mountaineers, who are averaging 38.2 points per game during that span.

–WR Marcus Simms finished with career bests in receptions (nine) and yards (138) and had a TD at Texas Tech, marking his third straight 100-yard receiving game

–David Long Jr. is averaging 11.5 tackles per game, 7.8 solo tackles per game and 2.13 tackles for loss per game. He ranks No. 3 nationally in solo tackles and tackles for loss

–S Kenny Robinson Jr. posted two interceptions against Texas Tech. They were his first two interceptions of the season, and he now has five for his career. It was also the first multiple-interception game of his career.
