Felton Davis, Michigan State’s leading receiver, has been diagnosed with a torn Achilles tendon, which means his season and his college career are over.
Davis, who is in his final season of college eligibility, suffered the injury in the second quarter of Saturday’s loss to Michigan. He is expected to undergo surgery Friday in North Carolina.
“Felton’s a positive guy and he’ll work towards (the NFL draft) and he’ll be OK,” coach Mark Dantonio said, according to mlive.com. “I think he’s got a very bright future.”
Davis leads the Spartans in receptions (31), receiving yards (474) and receiving touchdowns (four). He also scored one rushing touchdown.
Davis led Michigan State in receiving last year, and he will finish his collegiate playing career with 100 receptions for 1,450 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Cody White currently is Michigan State’s second-leading receiver with 20 receptions for 300 yards and two touchdowns, but he has been out since suffering a broken hand in a Sept. 29 loss to Central Michigan.
It remains unclear which player will be Michigan State’s starting quarterback this weekend against Purdue. Brian Lewerke injured his right (throwing) shoulder against Michigan, and was replaced by redshirt freshman Rocky Lombardi. Lewerke is considered questionable for Saturday’s game.
