Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh will name his starting quarterback by Monday, when the Wolverines expect to receive the official depth chart of their opening opponent, Utah.

Harbaugh said in the interest of fair and honest competition, he’ll declare a starter on the same day he knows which players are starting for the Utes.

Michigan opens the season Sept. 3 in a Thursday night game at Utah.

Fifth-year senior Jake Rudock said Harbaugh is pushing both players to seek perfection.

“He really wants you to be great. They’re striving to make us better players and better men. You have to understand that it’s with the best intention,” Rudock said.

Junior Shane Morris said the increased expectations are good for Michigan. But he also said outsiders crowning Harbaugh as a savior puts plenty of pressure on his first team in Ann Arbor since the coach, back in the college game after leaving the San Francisco 49ers, played for the Wolverines.

“It’s coach Harbaugh’s first year, a lot of people look at him as the savior of the school. That’s a lot on his shoulders, it’s a lot on our shoulders as well,” Morris said.
