PLAYERS TO WATCH

–RB Bryce Williams is coming off another strong performance, showing the ability to handle a heavy running load and becoming a threat in the passing game. The Gophers’ offense needs a reliable back to take the pressure off the passing game and move the chains in Big Ten play.

–QB Zack Annexstad suffered a left ankle injury last week, but he showed little signs of a prolonged injury until not playing in the fourth quarter due to precautionary measures. Annexstad is progressing nicely, even forming a connection with big-play wide receiver Tyler Johnson. The offensive line is protecting their prized quarterback, as Annexstad has shown the ability to complete a high volume of short-to-intermediate passes, which, in turn, helps establish a rhythm offensively.

–WR Tyler Johnson is coming off another solid showing, leading the team with nine catches for 133 yards and three touchdowns against Miami. Johnson has the talent to be among the best in the conference, but consistency and his chemistry with Annexstad holds up now the schedule gets much tougher is an area to watch.

–S Antoine Winfield Jr. is a big play threat on defense and special teams. Coach P.J. Fleck is debating whether to utilize Winfield on offense or not, despite his lack of experience playing offense. Trying Winfield out for a few reps might give the offense another weapon.

SERIES HISTORY: Maryland leads Minnesota 2-1. Maryland posted a 31-24 win last season over the Gophers in Minneapolis.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “I thought Bryce played better than he did last week. I thought he ran hard, he was tough. When you are 18, it’s hard to break those tackles right now. He made some huge plays.” — Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck on freshman running back Bryce Williams.
