Huskers’ surge meets Michigan State’s D

Nebraska, which has won three of its past four games, looks to continue to build off its late season momentum when it plays host to Michigan State (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) this week.

Nebraska (3-7, 2-5) throttled Illinois, 54-35, last week, racing out to a 38-21 halftime lead and never looking back. The offense delivered a complete effort with three touchdowns through the air and four on the ground.

The Cornhuskers’ offense now faces a tough test against the Spartans’ defense.

“This is close to or as good as the best defenses we’ve faced all year,” Nebraska head coach Scott Frost said Monday.

“I’ve only watched them for one day and I’ve got a ton of respect for what they do. They know their schemes and they know their issues, places that people try to hit them and they have answers for that.”

Saturday also serves as Senior Day for Nebraska.

“Any time seniors leave here it’s a big deal. … I feel bad the season hasn’t gone better for them, but at the same time these are going to be some of the guys that the foundation for what we’re going to do going forward is built on,” Frost said.

One of those seniors is running back Devine Ozigbo, who tallied 162 yards rushing on just 11 carries with three touchdowns against Illinois. His efforts earned him the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award.

“He just kept coming to work, doing his job, getting better,” Frost said.

“It’s even more special when someone has a great season when they persevere through something like that. What a great teammate and a great person. I really believe he’s putting himself in a position to keep playing football and not have his Nebraska career be the end of his career.”

Nebraska and Michigan State kickoff at noon ET with the game being televised on FOX.
