Ohio State quarterbacks J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones are opposed to a rotating system as coach Urban Meyer considers his starter for the season opener.

Barrett and Jones have been battling in training camp to determine the No. 1 quarterback to lead the defending national champions.

“I don’t think it would be as efficient,” Barrett said of a quarterback rotation. “I did that in high school and switched every series … and that’s kind of tough to do being that you can’t get into a rhythm, get a real vibe off the defense. I don’t think it would be the best idea.”

Meyer, who has used rotating quarterbacks during his career, is choosing between the physical, 6-foot-5 Jones and the quicker Barrett to lead the offense. Jones is considered to have the stronger arm, but Barrett has worked at improving his velocity and mechanics.

“I don’t think it’s a great idea,” Jones said of any consideration for alternating quarterbacks. “I don’t think you could get in a rhythm. In a two-quarterback system, if I run three plays and run off the field and J.T. runs out for a drive, I don’t know how well that would work with rhythm and timing with guys. Only one of us can play.”

The Buckeyes also have the return of Braxton Miller, a two-time All-Big Ten quarterback and player of the year who is coming off shoulder surgery. But Miller decided this summer to move to wide receiver to allow more time for healing.

“I just felt like I wasn’t ready to play quarterback fully,” Miller said of his decision to switch spots on the field. “I’m fortunate enough that God blessed me that I can play any position on the field.”

Meyer has indicated he won’t reveal the starting quarterback until Barrett or Jones takes the field for the first snap.

“They’re both working their tails off, and it’s one of the most refreshing competitions I’ve ever witnessed,” Meyer said. “This one is very genuine … I mean, they really encourage each other, they push each other. I think it’s very unique.”

The Buckeyes open the season on Sept. 7 at Virginia Tech.
