Five days before Ohio State begins defense of its national championship, Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones was hospitalized Wednesday night due to a migraine headache, multiple media outlets reported.
Members of Jones’ family told media members that the quarterback was undergoing tests. Jones’ mother, Florence, told the Toledo Blade “it’s just a headache” and added about her son, “He’s good.”
Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer has yet to name a starting quarterback for Monday’s game at Virginia Tech. Jones and J.T. Barrett are competing for the role.
Last season, Jones was Ohio State’s No. 3 quarterback behind Barrett and Braxton Miller. When the other two were hurt, Jones stepped in to make his first three starts in the postseason, and he guided the Buckeyes to the national title.
Jones, a junior from Cleveland, completed 56 of 92 passes for 860 yards with seven touchdown passes and three interceptions last year. Almost all of those stats were compiled in wins over Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game, Alabama in the Sugar Bowl (a national semifinal) and Oregon in the College Football Playoff title game.
Ohio State is a unanimous No. 1 in the preseason Associated Press poll.
