Badgers coach Paul Chryst said Thursday that Clement has been “dealing with some issues since before the (season-opening) Alabama game.”

“He has been undergoing treatment since that time and has seen some progress, but not to the point where our medical staff is satisfied,” Chryst said. “So after consultation with our medical staff, Corey has decided to have surgery for the sports hernia.

” I feel bad for Corey that this is impacting his season because I know how hard he works and how important this football team is to him. We are very confident that he will make a full recovery after the surgery and I know he will attack his rehab so he can get back on the field as soon as he can.”

Clement, expected to replace Melvin Gordon this season as the team’s primary running back, carried only eight times for 16 yards in Wisconsin’s opening loss to Alabama and sat out the last two games.

–The University of Texas has approved a financial settlement with former athletic director Steve Patterson.

Patterson, who resigned under pressure Sept. 15, has a guaranteed contract worth at least $1.4 million through 2019. However, the settlement approved by the University of Texas regents is expected to be worth less.

Three days before his resignation, a plane flew over Darrel K. Royal Stadium in Austin with a sign that read “Patterson must go.” Patterson had clashed with some donors and fans because of his aggressive fundraising tactics while running the wealthiest college athletic program in the nation.

An announcement on the final details of the settlement could take several days, according to school chancellor Bill McRaven.

–Florida State junior running back Mario Pender has spent the past two days in a hospital, stemming from a collapsed lung he suffered during Tuesday’s practice.

Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher said Pender was injured when he ran into the back of a teammate who was blocking. Pender completed the practice but was having breathing difficulties.

“There’s a possibility, they said he can play in 10-12 days so I don’t know,” Fisher told reporters. “Saw him in the hospital (Wednesday) night, a freak thing. I mean just a bump, not even a hard shot.”

Pender has rushed for 140 yards and one touchdown over the first three games.
