Florida International fired head coach Ron Turner after starting the 2016 season 0-4.
Turner will be replaced by defensive coordinator Ron Cooper on an interim basis.
The Panthers had a 10-30 record over three-plus seasons under Turner, who replaced Mario Cristobal before the 2012 season.
The fourth loss of the season Saturday came at the hands of Central Florida, 53-14, and Florida International plays rival Florida Atlantic this week.
