California’s Sonny Dykes is reportedly the top target for the Baylor head-coaching job.

Baylor officials are expected to focus their search for a new football coach on Dykes after SMU’s Chad Morris decided to remain with the Mustangs, ESPN reported Tuesday night.

Morris was considered the top candidate to replace former Baylor coach Art Briles, who was fired in May after an independent investigation about the university’s handling of sexual assault allegations involving football players.

The 47-year-old Dykes is 19-30 in four seasons at Cal, including a 5-7 record this season. The Bears went 8-5 in 2015 and quarterback Jared Goff was the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams.

Dykes was 22-15 in three seasons at Louisiana Tech from 2010 to 2012. His overall record as a head coach is 41-45.

Dykes, a Texas native, has been mentioned as a replacement for Tom Herman in Houston. Former San Francisco 49ers head coach and Baylor All-America linebacker Mike Singletary also is considered a candidate for the job in Waco, Texas.

The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday night that SMU officials have been working on a contract extension for the 47-year-old Morris, who is 7-17 in two seasons, including 5-7 this year. Morris was Clemson’s offensive coordinator from 2011 to 2014, before he was hired as SMU’s coach in December 2014.
