Senior Perry Hills was named Maryland’s starting quarterback for the season opener on Sept. 3.

“After an open competition through the spring and the first two-plus weeks of training camp, we’re excited to move forward with Perry as our starting quarterback,” said first-year coach DJ Durkin. “Perry has embraced this challenge from day one and has put in the work and shown improvement every day. He’s grasped our offense and the way we want to do things, and has shown tremendous leadership.”

Hills started eight games for the Terrapins in 2015 and had 1,001 passing yards with eight touchdowns. He rushed for 535 yards, the fourth-most by a Maryland quarterback in a single season. Hills set the Maryland single-game quarterback record by rushing for 170 yards at Ohio State last season.

Hills has played in 18 career games with 15 starts at quarterback for the Terps, passing for 2,423 yards with 17 touchdowns with six rushing touchdowns.

Durkin announced Wednesday that sophomore quarterback Caleb Henderson transferred to Maryland from the University of North Carolina. He will sit out the 2016 season and have two years of eligibility remaining.
