Pumphrey runs for 281 yards; Aztecs upend Cal

San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey rushed for 281 yards to lead the Aztecs to a 45-40 victory over California 45-40 on Saturday night in San Diego in a game with 1,067 yards of total offense for both teams.

The Golden Bears threatened after recovering an onside kick with 56 seconds left and driving to the San Diego State 22-yard line. But Cal quarterback Davis Webb threw an interception to San Diego State’s Damontae Kazee with nine seconds remaining on a third-and-3.

Pumphrey’s performance highlighted a wild offensive game that included 10 touchdowns. He had three of them, on runs of 57, 33 and 4 yards. He averaged 9.7 yards for each of his 29 carries against the Golden Bears, who outgained the Aztecs 604-463 in total yards.

Pumphrey also broke Marshall Faulk’s school career rushing record (4,589).

Webb completed 41 of 72 passes for 522 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.

After a back-and-forth game early, the Golden Bears (1-1) could not keep up with the Aztecs, who improved to 2-0 with their 12th consecutive win. Alabama is the only program with a longer win streak at 14 games.

The teams answered touchdowns until San Diego State was able to build on its 28-21 with a 39-yard field goal by John Barron with 38 seconds left in the first half.

Pumphrey increased the lead to 38-21 with a 57-yard scoring run with 8:40 left in the third quarter.

Cal responded with 13 straight points that included two Matt Anderson field goals and a 59-yard touchdown pass from Webb to Deme Robertson.

The Aztecs and Pumphrey again responded with the running back scoring from 4 yards to increase the lead to 45-34 with 2:47 left in the game.

Webb cut the lead to 45-40 with a 2-yard pass to Raymund Hudson with 56 seconds remaining. The ensuing onside kick was successful, with Derron Brown recovering at the Cal 47.
