Notre Dame defensive tackle Jarron Jones suffered a severe knee injury that likely will require surgery, according to multiple reports Saturday.

Jones, a starter for the Fighting Irish last season before suffering a Lisfranc injury in his foot, is expected to miss the season.

A source told Comcast Sportsnet Chicago that jones has “several tears” in his right knee that will require surgery.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly was expected to address the media following the team’s practice Saturday. The 11th-ranked Fighting Irish open at home against Texas on Sept. 5.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Jones, a redshirt junior, started all 11 games last season until he suffered the foot injury in a Nov. 22 loss to Louisville. He recorded 40 total tackles, including 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
