Quarterback Tommy Stevens said Friday he is transferring from Penn State to Mississippi State, where he will reunite with his former offensive coordinator, Joe Moorhead.

Stevens graduated from Penn State in December and can play immediately for the Bulldogs. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

“We look forward to Tommy joining our team and completing his final year of eligibility as a Mississippi State Bulldog,” Moorhead said in a statement. “Tommy is very talented and will be an excellent addition to our roster. He will have the opportunity to compete at quarterback this season.”

Mississippi State needs a quarterback to replace starter Nick Fitzgerald, who signed as a free agent with Tampa Bay after he wasn’t chosen in the NFL Draft in April. Stevens will be competing with Keytaon Thompson, Jalen Mayden and Garrett Shrader.

Moorhead coached Stevens for two seasons at Penn State, where the quarterback backed up Trace McSorley.

Stevens appeared in 18 games over three seasons with the Nittany Lions but had limited opportunities, completing 24 of 41 passes for 304 yards with four touchdowns and one interception.
