JJ Nwigwe – Noteworthy
At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, BYU senior football player JJ Nwigwe has been a workhorse for the Cougar offense since he arrived in Provo from Rockwall, Texas, in 2015. During his time on the BYU offensive line and as a tight end, his main objective was to take advantage of his size and strength as a blocker. But things have changed for Nwigwe. “I started as an offensive lineman but I couldn’t gain the weight so I got moved to tight end,” Nwigwe said. “This last season I needed one more year for school, so I asked for a redshirt. We have a great tight end room, so the coaches felt like I would be a better fit on defense. It’s been a fun journey.” He said the decision to switch sides of the ball came halfway through the 2018 season. “I played my four games but I had my redshirt year still,” Nwigwe said. “After my fourth game, that was when I started making the transition. I went over to the scout team defensive line and started working there. – Daily Herald
