PLAYERS TO WATCH

–RB Tony Jones Jr. once again could be the featured back as fellow ball carrier Jafar Armstrong battles an infection in his knee. Jones Jr. has averaged 5.4 yards per carry this season while scoring three touchdowns on the ground.

–DL Jerry Tillery leads the team with seven sacks through three games, which has served only to improve his status as a prospect for next spring’s NFL draft. Tillery will be the toughest test for Virginia Tech’s offensive line this week.

–S Jalen Elliott is looking for another big game after picking off two passes against Ball State earlier this season. Elliott is fourth on the team with 30 tackles this season, including one tackle for loss.

SERIES HISTORY: Virginia Tech leads 1-0.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “Our job is to handle the environment and go in and play really good football. If we do that and handle the environment, handle ourselves and our preparation, we’ll be in pretty good shape. If we can’t handle the environment, we can’t prepare the right way this week because we’re distracted because everybody’s telling us how great we are, then we’ll be in big trouble.” — Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly on visiting Virginia Tech
