Bowling Green fired coach Mike Jinks following a 1-6 start to the season.

Defensive coordinator Carl Pelini will serve as interim head coach for the Falcons for the remainder of the season.

“I want to thank Coach Jinks for all of his efforts with our football program and in the BG community,” athletic director Bob Moosbrugger said in a statement. “However, we felt it was time to make a change in leadership. These are not easy decisions and we do not take this lightly. This affects 11 coaching families, 112 student-athletes and numerous support staff. We wish Mike and his family the best in their future endeavors.”

Jinks was dismissed after Bowling Green sustained its fourth straight loss this past weekend after surrendering the final two touchdowns in a 42-35 decision to Western Michigan. He owned a 7-24 overall mark and 5-14 record in MAC play in two-plus seasons after assuming the head coaching position following the 2015 campaign.

Jinks replaced Dino Babers, who was hired away by Syracuse.

Bowling Green posted its lone win this season in a 42-35 triumph over Eastern Kentucky in Week 3.

The Falcons will hit the road this week to play Ohio as Pelini steps into the head coaching role for the first time since serving in that capacity with Florida Atlantic in 2012 and 2013.
