Florida freshman cornerback Chris Steele, who was the Gators’ top-rated recruit in the 2019 class, announced on social media Tuesday that he will transfer to Oregon.

Steele, from prep powerhouse St. John Bosco in Bellflower, Calif., enrolled at Florida in January and went through spring practice, working with the first-team defense while cornerback Marco Wilson rehabbed an ACL injury. Steele entered the transfer portal last week.

He would have to receive a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible this season for the Ducks.

Steele and his parents reportedly were unhappy that Florida coach Dan Mullen didn’t immediately reassign Steele to a new dorm room when he asked for the move soon after arriving on campus. He apparently was uncomfortable sharing a room with quarterback Jalon Jones, another early entrant.

Jones left the school after being accused of the sexual battery of two women. The allegations stem from two incidents that allegedly occurred about 30 minutes apart on April 6.

Steele was rated the No. 5 cornerback and the nation’s No. 42 overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to the 247Sports composite. He gives Oregon three of the top six recruits from the state of California, joining defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux (the nation’s No. 2 prospect) and cornerback Mykael Wright (No. 41 overall).

Before adding Steele, Oregon already had the Pac-12’s top-rated recruiting class, ranked No. 5 nationally in the 247Sports composite.
