PLAYERS TO WATCH

–TE Kaden Smith was already on the rise before the loss to Washington, and proved he could be the premier target if WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside is injured. Smith had eight catches for a team-high 107 yards and a touchdown against the Huskies.

–QB K.J. Costello has been uneven in the past couple of weeks. After throwing for 323 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions against Washington State, he labored by throwing three interceptions (albeit with 347 yards and two TDs) against a better Washington defense. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Cardinal, in an attempt to return to fundamentals, has a more run-heavy approach against the Beavers to try to snap out of its funk.

–LB Casey Toohill has dealt with injury issues this season, but managed 1.5 sacks of Washington quarterback Jake Browning. Tackling and strong secondary play haven’t been an issue for the Cardinal, but replicating the pass rush of years past has. Perhaps Toohill’s presence will be enough of a boon to make quarterbacks uncomfortable.

–RB Bryce Love has been out of the headlines for over a month, mostly because of his trudge back from an ankle injury. Love had 18 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown last week. Given’s Love explosive history, that’s pedestrian for him. Perhaps Stanford doesn’t need a phenomenal Love against Oregon State, but he may be key against resurgent rival Cal the following weekend.

SERIES HISTORY: Stanford leads the series 56-25-3 and has won eight in a row. Oregon State’s last win in the series came in 2009 when Jim Harbaugh coached Stanford.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “At Stanford I know they don’t lose back-to-back games, let alone three or four times in a five-game stretch. This one really hit me that we’ve had this feeling a lot the past month. It’s a very similar feeling, and it’s a feeling no one should have. I don’t wish it upon anybody.” — Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello, after his team lost 27-23 at Washington. The Cardinal has lost four of its past five games.
