Stanford is scraping for bodies at quarterback as the first session of spring practice got underway Tuesday.

Sophomore K.J. Costello, expected to be the team’s starter, will miss spring practice due to an injury, Cardinal coach David Shaw announced. Costello is dealing with a hip injury, Sports Illustrated reported, citing a source.

The absence of Costello will leave Stanford with no scholarship players on the roster for spring practice.

Keller Chryst, who entered last season as the starter before being replaced by Costello, already has announced his intention to transfer. He reportedly visited Tennessee last weekend.

Davis Mills, expected to serve as the backup to Costello, also will miss the spring sessions while he recuperates from an injury to his ACL.

That leaves the Cardinal with only one quarterback on the roster — walk-on Jack Richardson. He appeared in one game last season but did not attempt a pass.

Costello appeared in 11 games last season, making seven starts. He finished 124 of 211 for 1,573 yards with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions.
