UCLA linebacker Jaelan Phillips and running back Soso Jamabo will miss the remainder of the season due to head injuries, the team announced.

Because of the new NCAA redshirt rules, both players could save this season’s eligibility as neither has played in more than four games in 2018.

“Safety is our first concern, so let’s make sure everybody is safe before we talk about is a guy going to play for us three years from now,” coach Chip Kelly told reporters.

Phillips recorded just one sack in four games after entering the season with a wrist injury. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound sophomore was injured in an offseason scooter accident.

Per the Los Angeles News, Phillips “has not been seen on the practice field or the sideline during games since after UCLA’s loss (to Colorado) on Sept. 28.”

Jamabo provided a strong contribution with 1,170 yards rushing over his first three seasons before seeing his role reduced in 2018. The senior, who was suspended for the first two games of the campaign, had just five carries for 12 yards this year.

UCLA posted its first win of the season this past Saturday with a resounding 37-7 triumph against California. The Bruins host Arizona on Saturday.
