GAME BREAKDOWN

KEY MATCHUP: The bevy of injuries and departures piling up in the USC secondary throughout the season have meant interceptions come at a premium; the Trojans’ two are tied for fewest in the nation.

In contrast, the Cal offense has been vexed as a result of interceptions thrown. Whether Chase Garbers or Brandon McIlwain at quarterback, the Golden Bears have piled up more picks thrown than any team in the Pac-12. While the lack of depth in the USC secondary might necessitate a more cautious approach, the opportunity to take some gambles should be there for the Trojans to exploit.

DRAFT SLANT

–ILB Cameron Smith returned from missing what was effectively three games — he appeared briefly but accrued no stats Oct. 20 at Utah — and integrated back into the lineup at Oregon State. Smith made five tackles, helping to support the defensive effort against Pac-12-leading rusher Jermar Jefferson.

Smith, a four-year starter, nears the stretch run of his career ahead of this spring’s draft with an opportunity to cement his status among scouts. NFLDraftScout.com currently ranks him No. 10 overall at the position.

ROSTER REPORT:

–WR Michael Pittman came out at Oregon State due to a shoulder injury and will undergo an MRI.

–CB Iman Marshall suffered an ankle injury at Oregon State. Coach Clay Helton said he expects to know Marshall’s status by Tuesday or Wednesday.

–RB Stephen Carr sustained an ankle sprain last week. His status as of Monday was uncertain.

–CB Greg Johnson suffered a shoulder injury at Oregon State, and is questionable for this week.
