Washington linebacker Joe Mathis will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury, Huskies coach Chris Petersen told reporters Monday.
Mathis, a senior, will undergo surgery after missing the last three games. The decision to shut Mathis down was made last week, Petersen said.
The Ontario, Calif. native was the team leader in sacks with five for 25 yards and was ninth of the team with 25 total tackles.
Connor O’Brien has started in Mathis’ absence, totaling 16 tackles, 3 1/2 stops for a loss and one sack over the past three games.
Washington, ranked fifth in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, is coming off a 66-27 victory at California this past Saturday.
The Huskies host Southern California next Saturday, Arizona State the week after that and visit Washington State in their regular season finale.
