Perceived as an outsider in the quarterback competition at Alabama, the starting job might just be Alec Morris’ to lose ahead of the 2015 season opener against Wisconsin.

With Jake Coker idle for three practice s last week, Morris, who was a stand-in punter during spring practice, took advantage of his increased reps.

“Alec has done a nice job all (preseason),” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “I think he does a really good job of understanding the offense. He helps the other players play better. And I think that he has probably shown command at the position, which I think is important. We’ve just got to continue to work on touch, accuracy, efficiency. But I’ve been really pleased with what Alec has done in this camp.”

Freshmen Blake Barnett and David Cornwell appear to be distant afterthoughts in the competition to start Sept. 5 in Arlington, Texas, against No. 20 Wisconsin.

Last July, Coker was viewed as the favorite to start in 2014. He lost a competition to fifth-year senior Blake Sims and Alabama played in the first College Football Playoff, which ended in a loss to Ohio State in the semifinals.
