Florida quarterback Treon Harris and wide receiver Antonio Callaway have not been part of team activities since January while serving an indefinite suspension.

The school confirmed Tuesday ahead of the start of spring practice on Wednesday that the two players are not with their teammates. No explanation was given for the punishment.

Both players are enrolled in spring classes, but Florida coach Jim McElwain would not say when the two might be reinstated.

“We’re without a couple of guys who haven’t been with our team since January in Treon and Antonio,” McElwain said. “They’re still doing some school work and that kind of stuff. But they haven’t been with us since January and they won’t be with us as we’re rolling, so you won’t see those guys out there at practice.

“Guys, that’ll be the last that we talk about that.”

McElwain refused to provide more details and deflected additional questions from reporters, saying, “I am excited about all of those guys that are going to be here as we move forward to spring practice. That will be what we talk about.”

Harris stepped in as the starting quarterback last season after Will Grier was suspended mid-year for violating the NCAA policy on performance-enhancing drugs. The sophomore connected on 50 percent of his passes for 1,676 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions.

With Harris missing during the spring, Luke Del Rio is expected to have an early edge in the quarterback competiton. Del Rio is a transfer from Alabama and Oregon State.

Callaway saw action in every game last year as a freshman and had 35 receptions for 678 yards and four touchdowns. His 19.4 yards per catch was the best on the team in 2015. After the season, he was named to the All-SEC freshman team.
