Georgia freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis has been released from the hospital following emergency surgery on Thursday to remove a brain cyst.

Coach Kirby Smart made the announcement Tuesday during the SEC spring meetings in Destin, Fla.

“D’Wan has been awesome, his family has been awesome. He’s handled everything with great class,” Smart said. “D’Wan’s doing great. He got out of the hospital yesterday. He’s begun rehab and therapy,” Smart said.

The coach said Mathis will resume football activities when his health allows.

“We are expecting a full recovery and the timeline is the least of our concern right now,” Smart added. “We are worried about his health.”

Mathis, from Michigan, originally committed to Michigan State, then decommitted and pledged to Ohio State, but changed his mind again and signed with the Bulldogs in December after the transfer of quarterback Justin Fields.
