D’Wan Mathis, a freshman quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs, is recovering after having emergency surgery to remove a cyst on his brain on Thursday, according to multiple reports.

His father told DawgNation that the surgery was a success.

“The procedure today was a success, and I want to thank Coach (Kirby) Smart and Georgia for the way they treated my son and my family through all of this,” Terence Mathis said.

Mathis, from Michigan, originally committed to Michigan State, then decommitted and pledged to Ohio State, but changed his mind again and signed with the Bulldogs in December.

The quarterback’s father said his son had complained of severe sinus pain, citing the change in climate, prior to the surgery.

While Mathis had success both throwing and catching the ball at Georgia’s spring game on April 20, he figured to be behind junior college transfer Stetson Bennett IV and standout incumbent starter Jake Fromm on the depth chart.
