Greyson Lambert, a transfer from Virginia, will be the starting quarterback for Georgia’s opener, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt announced Monday.

Lambert won the job over sophomore Brice Ramsey and junior Faton Bauta. Ramsey was the backup last season to Hutson Mason and is the No. 2 quarterback this season.

Lambert started nine games for the Cavaliers last season and completed 59 percent of his passes with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Virginia finished 5-7.

Ramsey and Bauta have combined for only 44 pass attempts in their college careers, but they came out of Georgia’s spring practice as the leaders for the quarterback job.

Lambert was added to the competition after losing his starting job at Virginia during the spring and transferring to Georgia. Because he already graduated, Lambert could enroll at Georgia and be eligible to play immediately.

Richt did not specify what separated Lambert from the other two quarterbacks, saying only, “It was just a cumulative grade so to speak, a cumulative performance.”

The No. 9 Bulldogs open their season Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe.
