Junior Patrick Towles was named the starting quarterback to open the season for the Kentucky Wildcats, beating out promising freshman Drew Barker.

Towles threw for 2,718 yards and 14 touchdowns while completing 57.3 percent of his passes in 2014, but also threw nine interceptions. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder is currently rated as the No. 12 junior quarterback prospect in the country by NFLDraftScout.com.

Coach Mark Stoops also announced that offensive lineman Marcelys Jones has been dismissed from the program due to a violation of team rules. The Ohio State transfer and former Army All-American left the Buckeyes in hopes of seeing more playing time. If he lands at another FBS program, Jones would need to sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules.

The Wildcats open their season against Louisiana-Lafayette before beginning SEC play with games against South Carolina, Florida and Missouri.
