Mississippi wide receiver D.K. Metcalf will miss the remainder of the season with a neck injury.

Metcalf, who sustained the injury in Saturday’s win over Arkansas, leads the Rebels with five touchdown catches and is second on the club in both receptions (26) and receiving yards (569). The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Metcalf leads the team with four catches of at least 50 yards this season and his 21.88 yards per reception average trails only Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy among all players with at least 25 receptions.

Coach Matt Luke told reporters that Metcalf is expected to require surgery.

“(Metcalf) hurt his neck, and it is worse than we originally thought. He’ll be done for the season,” Luke said. “Long term, he’ll bounce back and he’ll be fine. We’ll make sure he gets the very best care.”

Metcalf earned freshman All-SEC honors last season after making 39 catches for 646 yards and seven touchdowns. He earned a medical redshirt in 2016 due to a foot injury that he sustained in his second game.

Metcalf makes up one-third of the Rebels’ group of receivers known as N.W.O. — Nasty Wide Outs — along with leading receiver A.J. Brown and DaMarkus Lodge. Brown leads the team in catches (50) and yards (650).
