The Baltimore Orioles placed shortstop J.J. Hardy on the 15-day disabled list Monday and activated utility player Steve Pearce from the DL.

The Orioles also recalled right-hander Jorge Rondon from Triple-A Norfolk and designated outfielder Nolan Reimold for assignment.

Hardy had been dealing with a groin injury for the past few days, and he told reporters Sunday that he would be going on the DL.

“I don’t want to be having the same talk we just had: ‘Is it going to be better tomorrow? Is it going to be better in two days?’ And keep dealing with that,” he said. “I guess it’s just the best thing for the team, and that’s that. It sucks.”

Hardy, 33, is hitting .222 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs in 93 games this season.

Pearce, 32, had been on the disabled list since July 19 with a left oblique strain. He hit .250 (3-for-12) in a four-game rehab assignment. In 58 games with the Orioles, Pearce is hitting .227 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.

Rondon, 27, is 3-1 with a 2.42 ERA in 29 relief appearances with Triple-A Norfolk. He made one relief appearance with the Orioles, throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings against the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 2.

Reimold, 31, appeared in 39 games for the Orioles while batting .227 with two home runs and eight RBIs.
