The Detroit Tigers and free agent outfielder Justin Upton on Monday agreed to a six-year deal worth more than $132 million, according to multiple reports.
Last year for the San Diego Padres, the 28-year-old Upton hit .251 with 26 home runs, 81 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 150 games.
Along with his power, Upton strikes out a lot. During the past three years in 1,666 at-bats, he has whiffed 491 times.
San Diego made Upton a qualifying offer, so the Padres will receive a supplemental first-round draft pick for losing the free agent.
Signing Upton will cost the Tigers only a third-round pick. They have a protected first-round pick, and they gave up their second-rounder to sign right-handed pitcher Jordan Zimmermann from the Washington Nationals.
Upton originally was drafted in the first round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005. In 1,184 career major league games for the Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves and San Diego, he has a career hitting line of .271/.352/.473 with 190 home runs, 616 RBIs and 115 steals.
Last year, Upton made the National League All-Star team for the third time in his career.
