The Minnesota Twins and versatile infielder/outfielder Marwin Gonzalez have agreed to a two-year, $21 million contract. The deal was reported by MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.
Gonzalez, 29, started at every infield position for Houston in 2018. He also saw time in the outfield.
The switch-hitting Gonzalez hit .247 with 25 doubles, three triples, 16 home runs and 68 RBIs in 489 at-bats last year with the Astros.
Gonzalez had a career year in 2017 and played a big role in the Astros winning the first World Series title in franchise history. He hit .333 with two doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in eight postseason games. During the regular season, he established new career highs in batting average (.303), doubles (34), home runs (23), hits (138) and runs scored (67).
The signing of Gonzalez will give new Twins manager Rocco Baldelli another lineup option. Minnesota has already added Nelson Cruz, Jonathan Schoop, C.J. Cron and Lucas Duda to its offense this offseason.
Gonzalez could be in line for another big season hitting in the friendly confines of Target Field.
