New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances will begin the season on the injured list as he recovers from a right shoulder impingement, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters Tuesday.
Cashman said an MRI revealed the impingement after the club was worried about Betances’ velocity this spring. Although there was no timetable for Betances’ return, it is not considered a serious setback as the 30-year-old right-hander will be treated with anti-inflammatory medication.
“I felt with a week left (in spring), it wasn’t fair to my teammates to go out there and not having the stuff I’m capable of throwing,” Betances told reporters. “I felt like I was kind of rushing to try to get back and compete, which is what I love doing. …
“I’m just a little behind. That’s how I feel right now. I’m not concerned at all.”
Betances is a four-time All-Star who went 4-6 with a 2.70 ERA in 66 appearances last season, mostly in a set-up role for the Yankees.
