The Seattle Mariners put veteran pitcher Felix Hernandez on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right shoulder strain.

The team also optioned outfielder Braden Bishop to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled a pair of right-handed pitchers, Parker Markel from Tacoma and Dan Altavilla from Double-A Arkansas.

Hernandez, a six-time All-Star and the 2010 American League Cy Young Award winner, recorded career strikeout No. 2,500 in a 9-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox. He gave up seven runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings as his record dropped to 1-4 with a 6.52 ERA.

The 27-year-old Altavilla started the season with the Mariners and pitched in one game in Japan, throwing 1/3 of an inning, before being sent to Tacoma. He has pitched parts of four major league seasons in Seattle, going 4-3 with a 3.26 ERA in 79 games.

He struggled with the Rainiers, however, giving up six earned runs over 4 2/3 innings in five games, and was sent to Double-A Arkansas, where he pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings.

Markel, 28, has yet to appear in the majors. In 13 relief appearances in Arkansas and Tacoma this season, he has struck out 35 batters in 17.1 innings and is 3-0 with four saves.
